If you want to make a journey, do not assign your companions to gather vehicles, spare tires and gas money, instead teach them to long for the endless immensity of the open road. Bastardization of Antoine De-Saint Exupery Clark is taking his kids on this trip come hell, high water, divorce, mild bruising, or Monteczuma’s revenge. He spent three years saving for it, and not his wife leaving him for another man, the loss of his job, or even the threat of incarceration will stop him. He will make it to Tierra del Fuego, if he just keeps the Motor home moving forward and on a road leading south. With his 17 year old daughter Chloe and 8 year old son Jack as unwitting accomplices, and possible kidnapping victims, they thread their way through Latin America. When they per chance bump into Anne and her son Jordan riding their motorcycles the same direction, they decide to combine their journeys. As the groups intertwine, new relationships are made while existing ones are strained and the trauma of the journey threatens to break even the strongest bonds. As the tolls on each of them accumulate and the weariness of travel sets in, one question remains, which among them will complete the journey?

All Roads South Roan Poulter Books

There's an inherent sadness that runs through this slim but meaningful novel. The main character, Clarke, has his hopes and marriage plundered in one fell swoop. So what does he do? He picks up the pieces, purchases an RV at a reasonable price, and takes his unwitting children on an adventurous trip to South America. But---and here's where it gets tricky---he fails to tell his wife (who's in love with another) and his job as an IRS auditor is in jeopardy. Thus begins their epic journey, like Martin Sheen searching for Colonol Kurtz in Apocalypse Now.

The journey is a fumbling mess like two inexperienced lovers mating for the first time. Chaos and mishaps ensue, but Clarke is determined to get to Tierra del Fuego even if he has to lie to his kids to get there. The group meets two motorcyclists who join them for their trip. One is a beautiful writer, and yes, love and lust happens.

Poulter has written a meaningful book. He takes family despair and, by describing the family's travel adventure, gives it an apt metaphor for life. There's plenty here to take from in this novel. I particularly admired Clarke's vulnerability in the face of one distastef after another.

Although I really enjoyed this book and read it quickly, it could use a vigorous edit, which would make this gem of a book really shine. If you like family stories combined with love and adventure, ALL ROADS SOUTH will be right up your alley. Highly Recommended!

All Roads South Roan Poulter Books Reviews

After reading The End of the Road, I was interested to see what new adventures would happen in All Roads South. Poulter did not disappoint in this next installment. You get a real sense of the locations he describes and these glimpses make the desire to visit and experience them for yourself all the more alluring. He has a strong sense of metaphor and understands the broad motivations that drive humans. Through his writing, Poulter brings to mind the allegorical prose of Oscar Wilde, with a modern flair and sensitivity to the nuances in which we live.

If you enjoyed The End of the Road, All Roads South will satisfy your yearning for more adventures only found when riding the road.
It's a fun tale. It requires a certain suspension of disbelief, what with Clark, its IRS auditor turned adventurer when his life turns upside down, as its unlikely hero.
Clark's bold intention of breathing life back into his marriage fails miserably. Perversely, his carefully planned surprise vacation to Europe becomes the instigation of his wife leaving him for another man, or at least of him finding out about it.
He is a contemporary Walter Mitty. He takes his kids, Jack and Chloe, with him, on the most quixotic and spontaneous of trips, traversing the Americas to their southern tip, Tierra del Fuego, in a broken down motor home and, later, a gift Jeep. He falls into a torrid love affair with adventurous Anne and her son, Jordan, who takes a more proper shine to Chloe, and this is the story of their misadventures.
One cannot imagine Clark behaving in such a manner, and that makes it all the more amusing.
