Shaking The Tree Mother Garden The Growing Years Martin Kirby 9781903490594 Books
This book is very different from the earlier book, "No Going Back--Journey to Mother's Garden"."No Going Back" is about quitting their jobs in England, selling the home, packing up, and moving the family to
a small, 10 acre farm in Catalonia that they purchased on impulse. The move was all about having
a life more centered around family than they felt they could have with their busy lives in the U.K. It was a book
filled with hope, adventure, and the interesting people who came into their lives.
This book looks back on the nine years of struggle since moving to Mother's Garden. Reality has set in as it
does with most people who give up everything and move to places that most people think of as vacation places.
A person full of angst about the problems of the world isn't going to give that angst up for long. And, when it
becomes clear that it's expensive to be poor in paradise; a person starts wondering if it's worth the struggle.
How long can they keep doing it?
It's clear that Martin Kirby feels the move to Catalonia was the right thing to do for his children. The family unit
was/is an important part of the culture there and he was able to actually be with his children as they grew. He's ecstatic about that.
However, the future is uncertain and he admits they could eventually move back to the UK or to another place in
the world.
This book was a little difficult to read because it was written in a stream of consciousness sort of way. I sometimes struggled
to find the thread that connected two thoughts. I missed that there was very little written about their Catalan friends and
neighbors. Constant financial worry is a theme in this book. You might want to think a bit before you spend at least 2-1/2
times the cover price to buy it. (As of this date, Dec. 4, 2015, you can get a copy for under $10. It's the first time I've seen it for under $20--I would grab it if you want it). Also on Kindle for $12.
