Only 21 at the start of the America's Revolutionary War, Benjamin Tallmadge was an enthusiastic patriot. Appointed by George Washington to organize intelligence in British-occupied New York, Tallmadge formed the famous Culper Spy Ring, whom he mentions in this volume without giving names. Scenes of battle, the discovery of Benedict Arnold's betrayal, the execution of his classmate, Nathan Hale, were all part of Tallmadge's experiences in the war. Written primarily for his children, this memoir is nevertheless an important document by one of America's great heroes. His description of Washington's parting in New York from his officers after the victory is especially moving and shows a more human side of the great leader.

If the reader of Col. Benjamin Tallmadge is expecting much information on his activities as George Washington's spymaster in the American Revolution, there will be disappointment. Although Tallmadge has a chapter about the Patriots capturing Maj. John Andre, the go-between for the treacherous Benedict Arnold and the British commanding general, he says little about his own role in the foiling of the plot. Although he describes a special operations-style raid he led on a British outpost on Long Island, he says nothing about his handling of the invaluable Culpeper spy ring in New York City that gave Washington crucial and reliable information. In short, Tallmadge doesn't blow his cover even after the Revolution was won and gives little information on his activities.Product details

It's as though you are reliving this amazing history that your dear brother or father are retelling to just you & giving secrets & details left out of history books.
Reading this memoir was like sitting in my living room listening to Colonel Tallmadge tell me about what it was like to be a part of the Revolutionary War. He is to be admired and appreciated both as an officer and a citizen.
This is a brief, well-written overview of Colonel Tallmadge's experiences as an officer during the Revolution. There is only a hint of his involvement as a spy master in the memoir itself after the peace was signed but before the British evacuated NYC, he got his people out for their safety. The endnotes, which were not written by him, add more detail to the entire story, including a little about his spy ring.
Great book about a man who was one of the historical figures in AMC's "Turn" series. If you like this book or the Turn series you will also want to read

I thought this was cool to read Tallmadge's own words. I wish it was longer. I think it certainly requires that you know the history previously since he doesn't usually mention the battles by name per se. He also says very little about heading the spy ring. This was noted in a previous review so I didn't expect those details. Still, the man was just a great person in every way and I was happy to read it.
PS The AMC series, "TURN", spurred my interest in this period above even what I previously had.
If you wish to head about the American Revolution in the words of someone who was actually there,this is the book for you. If you want to read about the war, you might want to look elsewhere. Benjamin Tallmadge was a modest man and did not begin to "blow his own horn" especially in regard to his spy operation. Details were sadly lacking. I did find interesting his description of John Andre and facts about the Arnold betrayal.
It's amazing to be able to read any firsthand accounts from this period in history. Before reading, I thought it might be more of a detached-feeling record of events but Tallmadge included plenty of his emotions and thoughts about many of the events he lived through. He wrote his memoir for his descendants and, as a result, it's written very conversationally, making it all the more relatable across time. No flowery language to impress a public audience. Just human experiences and insight. I felt like we sat down in a coffee shop and he told me fascinating anecdotes from his life during the revolution.
If you're looking for the Culper spy ring, which is what led me to this book, Tallmadge didn't write much about that. Like the other ring participants, he kept quiet about it even after the war. Even so, there are still plenty of revolutionary stories and familiar names here to keep a reader interested--seriously, this one man packed a lot of impressive accomplishments into the ten or so years that this memoir covers. This particular edition is great because of the notes that follow the memoir. They add a lot of historical context and expand upon some of the things Tallmadge only casually mentions, including events surrounding the Culper ring.
This book is a little 140-page gem. It's so short you can't not give it a go! I'm glad I came across it. I absolutely recommend it, especially to anyone interested in a more human side of history, as opposed to textbook history.
